Mr. McHugh

Joseph “Joe” George McHugh, 61, died unexpectedly at his home in Lampasas on April 29, 2024.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1962, in Oakland, California. Joe spent his childhood years in California, Iowa and Saskatchewan, Canada.

A bright and precocious child, Joe excelled in academics and continued his post-high school education at the University of Notre Dame, graduating with honors in 1984, with a philosophy degree. He went on to study law at Duke University School of Law, becoming a member of the Duke Law Journal and receiving his law degree in 1987. Joe was admitted to the California State Bar later that year.

Joe had a long career as a commercial real estate attorney in California and spent the past five years working with Albert and Cross, LLP, in Irvine, California.

In 2020, he rekindled a romance with a former flame, Lindy Cavness, and the couple, along with Lindy’s son, Gabe, moved to Lindy’s hometown of Lampasas in 2021. Lindy and Joe were married on March 16, 2022, at W.M. Brook Park.

Joe continued to work remotely from home until his death, juggling his family and work duties with patience and good humor.

He will be remembered for his devotion to family, as well as for his calm demeanor, sense of humor, and love of his cats Bella and Sammy and the Notre Dame “Fighting Irish.”

Joe is survived by his wife, Lindy Cavness; stepson, Gabriel Green; mother-in-law and fatherin- law, Ronnie and Venona Patterson; and a host of extended family members.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph James McHugh and Gloria Maier McHugh.
