Hugh Lawrence “Monty” Montgomery, 90, died on Feb. 16, 2022, at Lily Springs Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Lampasas.
A memorial service will be held at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, 3160 U.S. Highway 183 South at 10:30 a.m. March 12. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Hugh was born on Jan. 22, 1932, in Mineola, New York to Hugh Chester Montgomery and Kalo Scofield Montgomery. He grew up in Long Island, New York, and graduated in 1950 from Brunswick Academy in Brunswick, New Jersey.
In 1952, he joined the Air Force, served in the Korean War and was discharged in 1959 with the rank of sergeant.
Afterward, he worked at Texas State Optical, then began a career with the U.S. Civil Service as an aircraft mechanic until his retirement in 1988.
Hugh married Nettie Mae Fannin on Aug. 17, 1956, in Austin in the home of Elder W.S. Blackshear. They were married for 65 years.
Hugh was a member of Littlevine Primitive Baptist Church in Austin, where he served as pastor for many years. He also pastored many other Primitive Baptist churches across Texas, including in Izoro, Eldorado, Quemado, Florence, Burnet, La Vernia and Irving.
He enjoyed woodworking and gardening with his wife. He loved his family and airplanes, and was active in Little League sports and the Boy Scouts.
Hugh is survived by his spouse, Nettie Montgomery of Lampasas; sons Michael Montgomery and wife Judy of Midlothian, David Montgomery and wife Leslye of San Antonio, Tim Montgomery and wife Charlotte of Cabot, Arkansas, and Paul Montgomery of Houston; brothers Anthony Montgomery and wife Virginia of New York, N.Y., and Chet Montgomery and wife Beverly of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; a sister, Ginny Johnston of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family requested memorials be made to New Hope Primitive Baptist of Lampasas.
