Casino Night fundraiser, auction on tap

Wild West Casino Night will open Feb. 17 with dinner at 6 p.m. and gaming to begin at 6:30 p.m. The event benefits Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, Vision Lampasas and the Lampasas Lions Club. For tickets, contact the chamber at 512-556-5172.

Candidate forum slated

The Lampasas County Republican Party, along with the Texas First Conservative Alliance, will host a Republican candidate forum at the old Lampasas Middle School cafeteria building on Feb. 20. The event is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and run for about two hours.

Presbyterian church to offer way to commemorate Ash Wednesday

First Presbyterian Church will have “Ashes to Go” available to distribute on Feb. 14 to those who would like to observe Ash Wednesday.

LHS students earn medals at UIL academics meet

The Lampasas High School UIL Academics students competed Feb. 3 at an invitational meet at Waco Midway High School to sharpen their skills and improve scores before the district competition later this spring.

Lampasas County 27th District Court convened last week with Judge John Gauntt presiding over the day’s hearings. Defendant Andrew James Galvan of Copperas Cove was sentenced to 10 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Smith jury trial slated for August in 27th District Court

Jury trial has been set for a Lampasas man indicted on charges of sexual crimes against children. Michael Joseph Smith, 38, is scheduled for jury trial Aug. 26, with jury announcement planned for Aug. 16. His next court hearing is scheduled for May 17. Smith was indicted Sept.

Ames assault case to be heard by jurors in April

Jury trial has been set for a Kempner woman charged after she reportedly shot her husband. Sarah Jane Ames, 32, is scheduled for jury trial on April 15, with a jury announcement on April 5.

Cantu wiretapping case set for trial

A trial date has been slated for former Lometa Police Chief Melissa Cantu in a case where she has been charged with wiretapping. Cantu will appear in court March 25 to face a jury trial -- a course her attorney, Ben Michael of Michael & Associates of Austin, said is desired.
