Sgt. 1st Class (retired) Roy Frederick Smith, 76, of Copperas Cove, owner of Hydraulic Equipment Service, died on Sept. 13, 2021 at Darnall Army Medical Center after a brief illness.

Multiple departments fight estimated 65- to 75-acre grass fire

Several area fire departments responded to the 7600 block of North U.S. Highway 183 on Tuesday to quench a grass fire. Lampasas Fire Chief Jeff Smith estimated the fire — about eight miles northwest of Lampasas — burned a total of 65-75 acres.

ARRESTS

The following arrests were reported by area law enforcement officials. SEPT. 18 Ashley Rebecca Maupin, 31, of Kempner was arrested on a charge of assault causes bodily injury to a family member. SEPT.

Archeologists to explore nearby Barnett Clovis site

Archeologists will be excavating in the Barnett Clovis Field Saturday and Sunday. Ground-penetrating radar has marked more than 100 sites to be explored in a 14-acre sand field on Chambers Creek, which is a tributary of the Pecan Bayou close to the Colorado River.

Benefit fund established to assist Pacheco family with expenses

Recently, COVID-19 took the life of 30-year-old Amber P of Lampasas. She leaves a husband, Tomas Pacheco, and young children. A fund has been established to assist the family with expenses. Contributions may be made payable to Tomas Pacheco and mailed to: First National Bank P.O.

‘Gardening for Butterflies’ program set

The Green Thumb program, sponsored by the Highland Lakes Master Gardeners, will offer its final presentation of 2021 on Oct. 5 from 1-2 p.m. at the Kingsland Library, 125 W. Polk St. Sondra Fox will speak on “Gardening for Butterflies.
