Chabela was born on Nov. 21, 1923 in Lampasas to Jose Delgado and Ana B. Delgado. She grew up in the Lampasas area with several siblings.

She married Pedro G. Castillo and raised their family of six in Lampasas.

Chabela was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and of the Guadalupana Society.

She and her husband both worked for many years in the local poultry plant. She also worked for several years in the cafeterias of the Lampasas and Austin school districts where she received numerous certificates of appreciation.

Chabela was a fiercely independent woman who bought her first automobile by obtaining a personal bank loan on her own, despite her husband's objections. She maintained her independent spirit throughout her life. She prayed the rosary daily, sometimes twice. She was proud to be an American, and she always voted.

Chabela was preceded in death by all her siblings; her husband; son, Pete R. Castillo Jr.; daughter Esther I. Martinez; and a granddaughter, Teresa "Christie" Marez.

She is survived by her daughters Virginia Cleary of Lampasas, Veronica Castillo-Perez and Mary Lou Castillo, both of Austin; son, Francisco Castillo in New Mexico; 14 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren all across the United States from Portland, Oregon to McAllen, Houston, El Paso and Austin, Texas; and hundreds of nieces and nephews from New Jersey to California.
