Melba Edwards, 90, died on March 11, 2023.
Visitation will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel on March 17 from 10-11 a.m., with services starting at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Melba Gene Morris was born June 27, 1932, to Clayton and Ella Mae Morris in Burnet County in the Oakalla community. She was an only child.
She attended her first three grades at Briggs and then transferred to Oakalla due to a school district change. Melba went back to Briggs when the high school in Oakalla closed, and she graduated from Briggs High School in 1948.
That summer, Melba worked at Cass Rexall Drug on the square in Lampasas. She recalled that, as a child, her parents came to Lampasas every Saturday to do their shopping. While they were shopping, they dropped her off at the Leroy or Rio Theater to see a double feature movie, usually starring Gene Autry or Roy Rogers.
She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College for a year.
She married Daryl Edwards on Aug. 27, 1949, and they were married for 68 years until his death in March 2018.
Daryl and Melba lived in the Oakalla community until 1955, when they moved to Lampasas. Melba attended and graduated from Jackson Business College.
She worked for three years as the secretary at First Baptist Church and then for 18 years as the secretary at Lampasas Middle School. She worked under three principals: Charlie Elam, Curtis Bozarth and Glenda Summers.
Melba was a charter member of New Covenant Church in Lampasas where she attended until her health declined. She taught many Bible studies during her years at the church. Melba also volunteered at Lampasas Mission.
Melba and Daryl loved to travel in their RV across the United States and went to seven of the Canadian provinces. They also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Nova Scotia and Israel. They also loved to play 84.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Daryl.
She is survived by her daughters Sharon Moon of San Diego, California, and Karon Justice (Pat) of Lampasas; four grandchildren, John Moon of San Diego, Chad Moon (Melissa) of Apple Valley, California, Kara Hyden (Jim) of Lubbock and Shannon Lindsey of Lampasas; nine great-grandchildren, JJ, Jordan and Jacy Moon, Logan, Tyler and Kai Moon, James Hyden, and Isabella and Emberli Lindsey; along with several cousins.
Memorials may be made to New Covenant Church of Lampasas.
