Mr. Barrett

Charles Richard Barrett, 81, died Oct. 20, 2022, at United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls.

A funeral service will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel in Lampasas at 3 p.m. Oct. 25, with visitation an hour prior. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.

Charles was born on Jan. 26, 1941, in Lampasas to Orion Overton “Red” Barrett and Yvonne Smith Barrett. He grew up in Lampasas and graduated from Lampasas High School.

After high school, he had various jobs around town and joined the Army National Guard and the Lampasas Volunteer Fire Department, where through mutual contacts he would meet Sharon Sue Nance. They were married on June 17, 1965.

He then sought employment with the Austin Police Department and soon became a police officer. Charles discovered what he was meant to do and picked the perfect career choice. He continued in law enforcement and was promoted through the ranks.

Charles then found something that added even more meaning to his given profession, law enforcement training. He transferred to the training section shortly thereafter. He took to instruction with passion and soon began working with many other agencies in the Austin area.

He then found a new job that took him to the next level of his professional career when he was hired by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE), later changed to TCOLE. Charles traveled the entire state of Texas, teaching various departments and officers the professional standards that law enforcement was evolving toward. Although he was a quiet man, he rarely found himself alone. He acquired lifelong friends all over the state.

Charles worked at TCOLE until he retired after 33 years of service.

After retiring, Charles moved to Nocona to raising cows and enjoy old westerns and football on TV. He spent his time tinkering with his tractor or other projects in his shop.

Charles was known as “Pop,” and he missed his wife, “Grammy” (Sue), for the last several years. He and Sue had been married for 43 years when she died.

Charles also was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie; niece, Shelly; and nephew, Troy.

He is survived by his sons Clint Barrett and his wife, Allison, and their children Hunter and Cassie Nan of Round Rock; son Bryan and wife, Nichole, and their daughter Katy and Pop’s great-grandson, Beau of Nocona; and daughter Callie and Luke Schaffner of Petrolia, and son Taylor of Wichita Falls. Charles is also survived by his brother, Gary Barrett of Lampasas, and nieces Amy Barrett, and Anne Winans and husband Wayne, and nephew, Eric Barrett.

Charles was a member of First Baptist Church of Lampasas.

Donations may be made to either the Nocona or Petrolia volunteer fire departments.
