John Robert Bumpus was born on Nov. 27, 1944 to John Sylvan Bumpus and Norma “Brownie” Nichols Bumpus in Longview. The family moved to Lampasas from Odessa in 1951.

He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1963, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Upon graduation, Bumpus was awarded an athletic scholarship from the University of Houston to play baseball as a second baseman from 1963-1966.

He later finished his college education at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in education.

Bumpus spent time coaching in Weslaco, Pettus and Alvin. He returned to Lampasas in 1976 where he began a long business career. Bumpus worked for the Paine Insurance Agency, which he later purchased and renamed Goodwin-Bumpus Insurance.

He worked as a loan officer with Lampasas Federal Savings & Loan Association and later advanced to president. During his time with the savings and loan, he began his career as a real estate appraiser. Bumpus owned his own company as an independent appraiser for almost 40 years before his retirement in 2019.

Bumpus also was active in civic affairs in Lampasas. He served two years on the Lampasas City Council, was a Lampasas ISD school board trustee for 12 years, and he sat on the board of directors of First National Bank (now First Texas Bank). Bumpus also was a member of First Baptist Church.

His passion for sports, mainly basketball, was unwavering, and he passed this love of sports to his children and grandchildren. Bumpus often could be found at the Badger basketball games, sitting in “his seat” at midcourt opposite the players’ bench.

Bumpus was preceded in death by a grandson, Miller Bumpus.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jane Munn Bumpus; three sons, Rob Bumpus of Georgetown, Rex Bumpus of Lampasas and Ron Bumpus (Jaci), also of Lampasas; six grandchildren, Kord Bumpus, Kase Bumpus, Wren Bumpus, Pryce Bumpus, Mason Steele and McKane Steele; two brothers, Ronny Bumpus (Sue Ellen) of Lampasas and Mark Bumpus (Earl Ann) of Belton; and several nieces and nephews.
