Tommy Eugene Harkey, 89, of Lampasas died at Lily Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lampasas on Aug. 18, 2021.
Harkey served as a Lampasas County commissioner for two terms, until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1998.
Visitation was held Aug. 22 at Heritage Funeral Home, and the graveside service followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Harkey was born on Dec. 25, 1931 in San Saba to Thomas Riley Harkey and Tennie Pearl Boultinghouse Harkey.
He and Allie Mary Vernette Jones were married on Sept. 9, 1950 in Llano. They purchased their first home together in Lampasas more than 70 years ago.
He worked as a highway superintendent and was instrumental in the construction of FM 1431 from Georgetown to Lago Vista, and U.S. Highway 190 from Kempner to Lampasas.
Harkey was employed by the George Anthor Construction Company out of San Saba, and Mac Winters Construction Company and Allen Construction Company, both located in Johnson City.
Later, he was elected Precinct 4 county commissioner, where he continued to be involved with road maintenance and construction for Lampasas County.
Harkey’s favorite pastimes throughout his life were farming and ranching. He enjoyed raising cattle, and cutting and baling hay. He also was a regular at the Country Kitchen, where he enjoyed drinking coffee and eating lunch with his friends.
Harkey was a Baptist.
He is survived by his daughters Debbie Blakley and her husband, Jerry, of Izoro, and Connie Hartmann of Lampasas; sister, Lou Nell Harkey of Waco; grandchildren Randy Keith Thorp and his wife, Joni, of Lometa, and Evan Ross Blakley and his wife, Sarah, of Gatesville; and great-grandchildren Isiah Thorp, Chloe Thorp, Randon Thorp, Maya Kriegel and Everett Blakley.
He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Rodney Hartmann.
