A passenger in a two-car collision on Labor Day has succumbed to his injuries, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said.
Dario M. Chavez, 51, of Austin, was pronounced dead Tuesday at 3:24 p.m. at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple after his involvement in a crash on U.S. Highway 183 the previous day.
The crash occurred at 2:50 p.m. – in rainy weather –two-tenths of a mile north of County Road 4026.
Senior Cpl. Monte Carroll of the DPS said a 2010 Ford F-350 pickup driven by Brandy I. Jones, 44, of Round Rock was towing a 1976 homemade livestock trailer northbound on the highway while Maria Rios Lopez, 67, of Austin was driving southbound in a 2014 Dodge Charger.
The pickup with the trailer lost control when it hydroplaned across the roadway into the southbound traffic lane, Carroll said. The driver of the Charger tried to avoid a collision, but the Dodge struck the right rear of the pickup.
Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Andy Garcia Jr. pronounced Lopez dead at the scene.
Acadian Ambulance Service transported Chavez, who was in the front passenger seat of the Dodge, to Rollins Brook Community Hospital. Gloria Chavez Jaramillo, 50, a passenger in the back seat who apparently was lying down when the impact occurred, was taken by Acadian Ambulance Service to Killeen’s Metroplex Adventist Hospital.
Jones and her 10-year-old daughter – a right-front passenger in the Ford – were uninjured.
