Janese Upton Lancaster, 95, of Lampasas died Aug. 30, 2018 at a local nursing home.

Funeral service was Sept. 2 at First Street Church of Christ. Burial followed in Smith School Creek Cemetery. Sneed Funeral Chapel had charge of arrangements.

Janese was born June 18, 1923 near Izoro (Coryell County) to Ira Upton and Odelia (Hayes) Upton. She graduated from Evant High School as salutatorian and later married Thomas A. Lancaster. They were married until his death in September 2004.

Janese lived in this area all her life, except while Thomas served in the military at two duty stations. She was an active member of First Street Church of Christ in Lampasas, where she taught Bible classes for decades. She and Thomas went on several mission trips. She loved to entertain, cook, sew, garden and write. She also enjoyed being a hostess, trying to invite every new family at church and every visiting preacher to her home for a meal.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Ethel McCullough, Margie Coleman (Eugene), Iradell Storm (Jim), Crystal Kraner (Frank) and Lorraine Murrah (Dan); brothers, Orvelee Upton (Nona Reese and Dorothy Montgomery) and Frank Upton; one sisterin-law, Pat Upton; and one brother-in law, Ted Davis.

She is survived by her sons, Trent Lancaster (Mona), Dale Lancaster, Zane Lancaster (Libby), and Tom Lancaster; daughter, Connie Mallett (Mike); 12 grandchildren, Chelsa Istre (Creg), Melia Lancaster, Tara Mallett, Cassidy Stapp, Brandon Lancaster (Patty), Alandra Teodorescu (Danny), Clint Lancaster (Mitzi), Lyndsay Henson (Steve), Britt Lancaster (Deborah), Riley Lancaster, Aspen Roberts and Alicia Green (Todd); and 19 great-grandchildren, Sierra, Sterling, Samantha and Steele Istre, Adree and Koh Stapp, Brynn and Brance Workman, Avery, Brendan and Cash Lancaster, Mia Lancaster, Kalyn, Kenzie, Bryson and Braden Roberts, and Weston, Wyatt and Walker Green.

Other survivors include one sister, Bonnie Davis; one brother, Conrad Upton; and a sister-in-law, Iberia Upton.
