Lampasas City Secretary Becky Sims, who began work in her new role in December, said she will work diligently to serve residents.

The City Council appointed Sims as city secretary last year when Christina Marez, who had been city secretary since 2013, retired.

Last year, to earn her Texas Registered Municipal Clerk Certification, Sims took four courses requiring 50 hours of study each. She received her certification in January.

Sims has lived in Lampasas since 2009 with her husband, Van Sims, the city’s water/wastewater operations manager. Van Sims grew up in Lampasas.

In 2010, Becky Sims began working for the city as a utility clerk. She earned a permit-technician certification, and she became an administrative secretary and permit technician in 2014.

“I enjoyed it and wanted to learn and grow,” she said of working for the city.

Sims earned a codeenforcement officer license in 2015 and was promoted to assistant city secretary in 2017.

Before working for the city of Lampasas, Sims was a project manager at Sallie Mae in Killeen.

Sims said she enjoys working with people, staying busy and overcoming challenges. The greatest challenge as city secretary, she said, is ensuring the municipality meets the required deadlines for a variety of items.

Workdays are never alike for Sims, who serves as the city’s zoning administrator in addition to being city secretary.

“The city secretary’s office serves as the link between the citizens and their government, providing quick, courteous service and easy access to information,” she said.

As director of the citysecretary department, Sims oversees records management, City Council services and the publicinformation office.

She records City Council, Planning & Zoning Commission and Zoning Board of Adjustment meetings, and prepares agendas, meeting packets and minutes.

As zoning administrator, she conducts zoning, subdivision regulation, annexation and other property and land-use services.

Sims describes herself as a people-pleaser and said she strives to provide the best service possible.

“Every day, I learn something new, adapt to change and keep moving forward,” she said.

She said she intends to earn planner and recordsmanager certifications and become recertified as a registered municipal clerk.

Sims said Lampasas is a “small town with big dreams,” and she loves the people here.

“My office is always open, and I’m eager to help,” she said.
