March 2 will mark the 187th birthday of Texas’ independence from Mexico. On this day in 1936, a formal document was signed by 59 delegates who represented each of the Texian settlements. This important declaration officially declared our independence and created the Republic of Texas.

HPU highlights Sumners Scholars at recent event

Howard Payne University recently hosted the Sumners Social for prospective and current students, with nearly 60 attendees present. HPU Sumners Scholars shared the opportunities of the program over free hot chocolate and s’mores. The event was held in conjunction with the HPU’s Office of Admissions as a part of a student preview day.

Future Shakespeares took center stage Friday for Taylor Creek Elementary School’s second annual Poetry Café. Fourth-grade students had the opportunity to show off the poetry skills they have been working on for the last month.

February sales tax rebates show gains

Sales tax growth continues across the Central Texas area, as February allocations for cities in Lampasas and the surrounding counties climbed this period for all but the city of Burnet. Burnet recorded a 1% drop in revenues this month, while its counterpart Marble Falls notched a 5% gain in sales taxes for February.
