With wind chills as low as negative 5 degrees Fahrenheit in the region, the National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for portions of North and Central Texas on Tuesday morning.

NWS meteorologists issued a wind chill advisory and hazardous weather outlook on Tuesday morning, effective until noon for Lampasas, Coryell, Bell, Hamilton and surrounding counties.

“The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” officials said.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. Prolonged exposure to the cold may result in frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Those who must venture outdoors are encouraged to dress warmly and wear a hat and gloves.

According to a hazardous weather outlook also issued Tuesday morning by NWS, “Exceptionally cold weather is expected this morning with wind chill values as low as minus 10 degrees. Continue to protect outdoor pipes and let indoor faucets drip during this prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures.”

Officials also encouraged caution to motorists.

“Use caution when traveling this morning as localized areas of black ice or partially melted snow will result in slick spots on roadways,” meteorologists said.

The low temperatures are expected to continue this week, with stormy weather in the forecast next week.

“Cold temperatures in the 10-15 degree range are expected again Tuesday night and Wednesday morning with wind chills in the single digits. ... Thunderstorm chances return to the forecast early next week.”
