Two men dead Wednesday in connected shootings

Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a double shooting incident that began in Killeen and ended in Lampasas County.

According to a news release posted by Killeen Police Department, the KPD, Copperas Cove Police Department and Lampasas County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a shooting in Killeen on Wednesday and a connected shooting in Lampasas County that left two men dead.

On Wednesday at 1:36 p.m., Killeen officers were dispatched to the 6300 block of Taree Loop after a man called 911 and said he shot his friend at a residence. Officers arrived and found a deceased male with gunshot wounds inside the residence.

Copperas Cove police officers located the suspect’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in Lampasas County. KPD authorities said the suspect refused to get out of the vehicle and sustained a selfinflicted gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the two men were friends, and it was confirmed they had engaged in an argument and altercation, which led to the shooting, KPD officials said in a Thursday morning statement.

The victim found deceased in the residence was identified as 26-yearold Jarquis D. Pold. He was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Nicola James at 3:01 p.m.

The suspect was identified as De’Tavius K. Smith, 26. He died from a selfinflicted gunshot wound in Lampasas County and was pronounced deceased by Lampasas County Justice of the Peace Dan Hause at 2:06 p.m.

No police officers discharged their firearms, authorities said.

The Lampasas County Sheriff’s Department and the Texas Rangers will conduct the death investigation in Lampasas County. The investigation is ongoing.

LCSO authorities were unavailable for comment as of press time Thursday.
