Severe cold weather coming to Lampasas this week

Single-digit temperatures are something most Texans are not used to, and that is what sits around the corner as Christmas approaches.

Monique Sellers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that starting Thursday temperatures will begin to drop as a heavy cold front moves in, and from Thursday night through Saturday, low temperatures could be in the single digits and teens.

With wind gusts from the front potentially reaching up to 45 mph, the wind chill could even be below zero in Lampasas.

With this weather, it is important for residents to be prepared. Make sure pipes are covered so the water supply does not freeze, and keep a “winter kit” in the vehicle in case of a breakdown.

“It only takes a couple of minutes before you start to feel the effects of these temperatures,” Sellers said.

The meteorologist also said that Sunday could be the day freezing temperatures stop, as the low is predicted to sit around freezing before it warms up into the mid-40s during the day.

The saving grace of the incoming weather is that it is predicted to be a dry, cold front, which means ice should not on roadways and no melting precipitation once the temperatures begin to rise.

The Central Texas area has not forgotten the big freeze that nearly shut down the region in February 2021.
