A 19-year-old Kempner man is dead after a shooting reported Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Kempner Police Chief Heriberto “Eddie” Rodriguez said on Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 100 block of Orchard Street involving the discharge of a firearm.
Rodriguez told the Dispatch Record he was made aware of the situation at about 7:30 a.m. that morning. Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office incident reports show it received the emergency call at 7:14 a.m.
When officers arrived, they located a gunshot victim, identified as 19-year-old Jerry Shawn Worsham Jr.
In a public statement issued Wednesday night, Kempner Mayor John Wilkerson – who is a career peace officer – said that upon officer arrival, Worsham was “found to have no signs of life” and later was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Dan Hause.
Hause has ordered an autopsy for Worsham.
Kempner residents took to social media to ask about the appearance of police officials behind Dollar Tree on Wednesday morning at about 7:40 a.m.
Rodriguez told the Dispatch Record this shooting is “definitely an isolated incident,” and Kempner police do have a suspect in this case, however “no one is in custody at this time,” he said.
Kempner Police Department is the primary investigating authority, but Rodriguez said the Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.
“The person(s) involved in this incident have been cooperative with the investigation, and there is no reason to believe there is any further danger to our citizens or those visiting this community,” Wilkerson said in his statement. “The professional law enforcement officers working for this city are actively investigating this situation to determine whether a violation of Texas law was committed, and if so, ensure those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
“As with any loss of life, I ask that you keep the victim(s), along with the first responders who must deal with the worst humanity has to offer on a frequent basis, in your thoughts and prayers,” the mayor said.
“Lastly, but most importantly, on behalf of the city of Kempner, I offer my most sincere gratitude to the men and women of the Kempner Police Department, the Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety-Texas Rangers Division, Hamilton EMS and the Kempner Volunteer Fire Department for their response and assistance in this tragic situation,” Wilkerson said.
This marks the second homicide investigation within the city of Kempner this year, a community of 1,150 residents, according to the most recent census data. The previous homicide occurred July 14 when 61-year-old Myer Nena was allegedly beaten to death. The primary suspect in that case is his son, Carson Myer Nena, 28, who was indicted Sept. 13 on a charge of murder.
