BRIEFLY

BURN BAN IN EFFECT

A county burn ban is in effect outside incorporated city limits. The ban prohibits many types of outdoor fires, including open campfires, plus brush fires that do not meet specific conditions.

Exceptions to the ban allow:

• barbecues in above-ground grills “in a safe area clear of debris.”

• the burning of household trash in a receptacle “covered with a mesh material with no more than 1/4-inch openings and supervised in a safe area clear of debris.”

• controlled burns “necessary for the

maintenance of existing and actively farmed hay fields with a defensible space around the burn area.” Hay field fires also must have “fire suppression tools, and personal presence during the entire controlled burn.”

• prescribed burns conducted by a certified prescribed burn manager.

• the use of air curtain incinerators by an operator who has a permit from the state environmental commission.

A violation of the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum fine of $500.
