Kempner to sell, donate police equipment and guns

At last Tuesday’s Kempner City Council meeting, the council OK’d the disposal of some “outdated police equipment items” which, Mayor John Wilkerson said included five handguns that are not issued. He added that the firearms were the only items worth selling.

County COVID-19 numbers spike to triple digits

Lampasas County, like many in Texas, has seen a significant increase recently in the number of active COVID-19 cases. New cases, thought to be primarily of the Omicron variant, have jumped to the triple digits here.

Sheriff Jess Ramos said his department is striving to maintain public safety in a growing county, despite a significant staffing shortage. The Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office is down four officers – an entire shift of deputies, Ramos said.

An arrest was made in Lampasas Sunday afternoon after a multi-county vehicle chase, police said. At approximately 4:09 p.m., the Lampasas Police Department was alerted that deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department were pursuing a white Volkswagen sedan headed north on South U.S.

Commissioners OK additional funds to cover rising health costs at county jail

The novel coronavirus has resulted in a price uptick across many industries, including area jail and prison systems. Even though Texas’ prison population has decreased, according to state officials, the publicly funded costs to treat inmates’ medical conditions continue to rise.

Hike and bike trail expected to attract more tourists to Lampasas

A hike and bike trail at the 580 Sports Complex would bring opportunities for locals and visitors, city officials said. The project has been underway slowly but surely for about 18 months, City Manager Finley deGraffenried said.

Kempner officials table vote on pets in park

At the Kempner City Council meeting Tuesday, the council discussed amending an ordinance that bans pets from the Sylvia Tucker Memorial Park. With multiple opinions expressed, the council decided to postpone voting on the matter and will hold a workshop on the issue.

Lampasas County 27th District Court convened last week for its first setting in the new year. Judge John Gauntt presided over the day’s hearings. Defendant Yaritzel Chandler of Copperas Cove pleaded guilty to evading arrest/ detention with a vehicle, which was punished as a Class A misdemeanor.
