‘A Matter of Balance’ classes set for October

The award-winning program, “A Matter of Balance,” has been so popular that the AgriLife Extension Service will offer it again next month.

These classes will be held at the Lampasas Senior Center, 901 S. Live Oak St. and are open to the community. Brought as a partnership of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Area Agency on Aging of Central Texas, the classes are free, with no age or income requirements.

The goal of A Matter of Balance is to increase safe activity levels and reduce the fear of falling among older adults.

Taught in a series of eight sessions, the classes are held on Tuesday and Friday mornings beginning Oct. 20 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. through Nov. 13. Attendance at most of the classes is important.

Please RSVP to 512-556-8271 ext. 140, as class size is limited and may fill up.

“Falls are common and can be costly,” said Kristen McBride of Baylor Scott & White, and co-instructor of Health and Wellness Programs offered by the AAA of Central Texas. “Data tells us that one in three Americans aged 65-plus will fall this year, but those falls do not have to occur just because of age. In these classes, we discuss ways to remain active, improve balance and avoid faulty habits that increase the chance of falling.”

County Extension Agent Karen DeZarn noted the program has been popular in Lampasas County.

“I hope you can take advantage of this free program that can help you gain confidence and make positive changes in your or a loved one’s life,” she said.
