national merit scholarship programThe National Merit Scholarship Corp. has announced the names of more than 16,000 semifinalists in the 71st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Cort Maples participated in the West Texas Fair & Rodeo in Abilene over the Labor Day weekend. In 2024, he won Reserve Grand Champion Heifer and came back this year to try to top that accomplishment. He showed three of his Miniature Hereford heifers and a Miniature Hereford bull. Maples won Grand Champion Female with his heifer, Lena, in the Junior and Open Shows. He also had division wins with another heifer and his bull. courtesy photo

A 16-year veteran of the Kempner Volunteer Fire Department, Justin Martin, has been named the department’s new fire chief.Martin accepted the position at last week’s Kempner VFD Board of Directors meeting.

The annual Indian Artifact & Mineral and Gem Show has a new partnership with a locally produced artifact magazine.The show is hosted this year by Vision Lampasas in association with Texas Cache Magazine, which is a brand-new partnership, said Dorinda Barrett, Vision Lampasas past president.

The Pearl Main Stret Festival will provide fun and fellowship Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pearl Country Church in Pearl. Donations received this year will go toward disaster relief.A meal of fried fish, French fries and hush puppies will be served during the festival on a donation basis.
