Lometa fell to Santa Anna 49-27 in the varsity girls’ basketball season opener on Saturday. The Lady Hornets’ game Tuesday against Priddy was canceled, as the Lady Pirates had coronavirus issues.

Lometa (0-1) is scheduled to play Oglesby on the road Saturday at noon.

Shooting guard/small forward Claudia Carbajal led Lometa with 11 points against Santa Anna, including three three-pointers. She also scored eight of the 14 points the Lady Hornets had in the third quarter.

Joining Carbajal in the starting rotation were her sister Janette Carbajal, Shyanne Tower and Sierra Tower, and Emily Andrade.

The teams were tied 7-7 after the first quarter. Santa Anna went ahead 21-9 in the second quarter.

Lometa coach Frank Reyes III said the second-quarter slump was due to “a lot of missed shots, missed free throws. We missed all five of our free throws in the second quarter, and we only made one basket against a lot of good looks. We had a few turnovers.”

After trailing by 12 at halftime, the Lady Hornets outscored the Lady Mountaineers in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10 points.

In the fourth quarter, Lometa scored once from the field and made two free throws, while Santa Anna pulled further ahead.

The Lady Mountaineers had seven three-pointers, including five by the same player. They ran a 2-3 zone most of the night, Reyes said.

“Shyanne Tower was real active on the boards,” Reyes said.

Janette Carbajal had a lot of good looks inside and had some open 3s that wouldn’t fall, the coach added.

With 18 players on the roster, Reyes plans to have a junior varsity team. But there was no JV game on Saturday, and the next several opponents do not have a JV team.
