In the 1950s, my friend Ward Lowe [then publisher of the Dispatch Record] mentioned one day, “Why don’t you write something about guns and hunting for the paper.”
I said, “Gosh, I’m not a writer.”
Ward said, “Oh, just make some notes or something.”
So I did. I wrote for a while until I started traveling, which led to a 20-something-year hiatus. When I quit traveling, I started writing again.
