Retired Chief Petty Officer Stephen Drew Enos was born June 12, 1947 in Niagara Falls, New York to John and Margaret Stephens Enos.
He graduated from Niagara Falls High School on June 29, 1965, and immediately joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Whitehall, USS Ozark, USS Shrike, USS Bluebird, USS Sailfish, USS Permit, USS Guitarro and 12 years on the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclearpowered submarine.
He served in Brooklyn, New York; Bainbridge, Maryland; NTC Great Lakes, Illinois; Asuga, Japan; Danang, RVN; San Diego, California; Mare Island in Vallejo, California; and OIC Submarine Rescue Unit in North Island San Diego.
After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Stephen worked for Glenfed Mortgage in San Diego for six months before joining the staff at Valhalla Scientific in San Diego.
Stephen is survived by two sons, John and Jason Enos, of Niagara County, New York.
He also leaves behind many veteran brothers and sisters in the VFW and American Legion, as well as David Garon in Washington state, David Hightower of California, David Reese and Wayne “Dog” Barcomb of Killeen, and companion Susie Wakeland of Lampasas.
Stephen was baptized into the fellowship of Adamsville Baptist Church, and he proudly hung his Baptism Certificate on the wall of his house. He attended services there until health issues kept him at home.
Services and interment will be at Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Heritage Funeral Home of Lampasas has charge of arrangements.
