The Lampasas County Show Barn will host a sheep and goat show on Saturday. Event coorganizer Kelli Isom expects about 400 head will be shown, compared to the 30 or so sheep and 30 or so goats that normally are part of the county show in January.

“We have people coming from as far as like around Houston,” Isom said. “We have people coming from up around Dallas … It’s open to anyone who wants to come.”

Lampasas FFA Booster Club is putting on the event.

The cost is $30 per head per ring. There also is a $5 fee to enter the showmanship contest, which is the first event at 9 a.m.

All registration is handled on the day of the event.

Pee wee, junior, intermediate and senior showmanship divisions will be offered.

A panel fence will divide the show ring in half to allow separate shows at the same time, one for lambs and the other for market goats.

Lambs will be shown in the following breed order: finewool, finewool cross, Southdown, Dorper/hair sheep and medium wool.

Goats will be shown by weight division: lightweight, medium weight and heavyweight. Depending on turnout, Isom expected two to three classes per division.

Last year, the FFA Booster sheep and goat show was held in conjunction with the swine show in December, but this year they were not able to be scheduled at the same time and place.

Former county judge Wayne Boultinghouse will announce Saturday’s show, with the assistance of Judy Hail.

There will be two judges.

“One of them has judged Texas major shows before; the other one is kind of a new, up-and-coming really popular judge,” Isom said.

Exhibitors must compete in Ring A to then compete in Ring B.

In Ring B, the grand champion will receive $1,000. The reserve champion will earn $500, and the top three in each class will receive a cash prize.

In Show A, prizes are donated by local and non-local businesses, and they may include show supplies.

The goat show is sanctioned by the Junior Meat Goats Show Circuit.

Isom expects a boost in participation after a big Coleman show, scheduled for this weekend, was canceled.
