A Kempner man was arrested on a murder charge following a fatal shooting on Friday.

Michael Oran Woods, 43, was arrested at a home in the 1500 block of County Road 3340 where police said he admitted to shooting his friend from behind.

According to a Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office news release, at 11:46 a.m. Friday, deputies responded to a call in reference to a man who had been shot. The caller, 28-year-old Anna Brett Reid, said her boyfriend had been arguing with his friend and then shot him.

When LCSO Sergeant Jerome Ervin and Deputy Ray Barrera arrived at the home, they found Glenn Allen Maples, 33, laying in the yard with a fatal gunshot wound on the side of his chest.

The officers also found a Bushmaster XM-15 on the porch, and the suspect inside the residence. The officers secured Woods and the weapon.

Lampasas County Sheriff Jess Ramos arrived to assist with the investigation and learned Woods is a convicted felon. According to the Texas Penal Code, a person convicted of a felony cannot have a firearm within their possession within five years of their release from confinement.

Lampasas County Sheriff’s Investigators Matt Barnes and Nick Roberts investigated the crime scene with the assistance of Texas Ranger Justin Duck.

During the investigation, officers obtained a confession from Woods, who said he had a disagreement with Maples, and shot him while he was walking away. Officers booked Woods into Lampasas County Jail at 3:20 p.m. that day on charges of murder, a first-degree felony, and felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

“This is an ongoing investigation with the possibility of other charges added,” authorities said.

Maples was transported to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas. Maples’ social media accounts state he was a Copperas Cove resident and is survived by a son. A fundraiser has been created on Go Fund Me to pay for funeral expenses.
