A jury trial has been scheduled for a Midland man accused in a Lampasas case of child sex abuse.

Kasey Shannon Calvery, 43, was announced ready for jury trial in the 27th District Court of Lampasas County last week. He faces a charge of sex abuse of a child-continuous with a victim under age 14. His trial was scheduled for March 27, with a jury announcement set for March 10. He also has a separate charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, and a prior expunged accusation of sexual harassment. Calvery was indicted on May 12, 2021 on two charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years of age. Court documents show the victim was 7 when the alleged assault took place.

Calvery was arrested May 24, 2021, and later was released on bond of $10,000.

Calvery, who is represented by defense attorney Paul Harrell, initially was scheduled for an arraignment hearing Jan. 20, but his attorney filed a waiver of arraignment.

In June of last year, Harrell and his client filed a motion to quash due to what they claimed was a failure of the indictment to describe that the alleged assault had occurred in Lampasas County. A motion to quash is a request to a court to render a decision or proceeding invalid.

Calvery maintained that he and the alleged victim both lived in Gregg County between 2004 and 2006, during which time the sexual assault was said to have taken place in 2005.

Harrell told the Dispatch Record the issue was a question of proper venue for the case. The motion to quash was denied early this year.

Harrell was unavailable for comment as of press time.

Although the assault allegedly occurred 16 years ago, Lampasas District Attorney John Greenwood told the Dispatch Record there is no time deadline on sexual assault cases involving a child in the state of Texas.

This case is not the first sexual assault charge filed against Calvery. In December 2007, while working as a paramedic for Copperas Cove Fire Department, Calvery was accused of sexual harassment of a medical patient, according to a March 2008 Copperas Cove Herald report.

Calvery was arrested Feb. 14, 2008 by Copperas Cove police after an internal investigation by the city’s Human Resources Department into a sexual harassment complaint.

The 2008 report stated that while a female patient was being transported by the Copperas Cove Fire Department on Dec. 13, 2007, Calvery touched and exposed the patient’s breasts several times under the guise of assessing her injuries.

The Herald reported that a week prior to his arrest, Calvery was interviewed at the Copperas Cove Police Department about the incident and admitted in writing that his actions were not part of his job and that he touched the patient inappropriately “for his own gratification.”

He was fired from the department in March 2008.

Copperas Cove Police Department officials told the Dispatch Record that this case has since been expunged.

On social media, Calvery lists his employment from 2019 to present day with Odessa High School as a teacher and coach, but school officials and Ector ISD online staff listings showed no record of current employment for Calvery as of Friday.
