LHS scores 82 in back-to-back games

Lampasas scored 82 points twice in less than a 24-hour span Friday and Saturday.

On Friday at Cameron Yoe, the Badgers rallied from a 24-point, thirdquarter deficit to tie the game twice but lost 85-82.

Nate Borchardt scored a career-high 34 points, and the Badgers’ 36 points in the fourth quarter made for their highest-scoring quarter ever under coach Aaron Nuckles.

On Saturday, Lampasas won 82-53, hosting the former district rival Taylor Ducks, who beat Lampasas by 16 the last time around.

Lampasas improved to 2-1 heading into Monday’s home game against Georgetown East View after press time.

East View also was 2-1 as of Saturday morning.

In Friday’s game at Cameron Yoe, the home team jumped out to a 25- 15 lead. By halftime, the Yoemen were ahead 44- 30. That lead expanded to 24 points before the Badgers turned momentum around by limiting turnovers, which led to better offensive opportunities.

“We were not ready to play the game,” Nuckles said.

Cameron was ahead 65-46 at the end of the third.

The Yoemen’s biggest lead of the fourth quarter was 21 points, but Borchardt scored to tie the game at 76-76 and again at 79-79.

Then Cameron was able to break the Badgers’ defensive pressure, knock down a three and hang on for the close win.

Borchardt scored three three-pointers.

“He’s become a multi-position player as we knew he would …,” Nuckles said. “He’s finding other ways to score.

Cameron’s leading scorer had 22 points, and the rest of the Yoe offensive breakdown was balanced.

Taylor (0-3) was the district runner-up and a bi-district champion last year, but the Ducks have just two returning players from their 2019- 2020 team.

“The way the pendulum swings, they had that really good group,” Nuckles said, and “we’ve been playing freshmen and sophomores. Those guys have been growing up and getting more mature, and we feel like its kind of our time … we’re starting to come of age.”
