Robert Douglas Campbell Jr., 81, died on Jan. 8, 2022 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
A funeral service will be held at New Covenant Church in Lampasas Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.
Visitation will be at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas on Jan. 21 from 6-8 p.m.
Robert was born on Feb. 15, 1941 in San Antonio to Robert Douglas Campbell Sr. and Dorothy Frazer Campbell. He grew up in Lampasas and graduated from SAS, a private school in Tucson, Arizona in 1959.
After high school, he attended the University of Tucson.
In 1973, Robert was awarded the first United States National Metallic Silhouette Champion honor. He also was a longstanding member of the Tucson Rifle Club and National Rifle Association.
Robert was an accomplished photographer, and his photos have appeared in publications and ads throughout the world. His photography also has been included in fine art exhibitions at the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the Nature Conservancy, the International Wildlife Museum, the Museum of Natural History in Paris, the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and many others.
His work was published in editions of Arizona Highways magazine over many years. Robert also was awarded the cover of Field & Stream magazine and had presentations in many other publications.
Robert was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 1998. Altogether, he had over 250,000 slides, photographs and digital images in his library, which dated back to the early 1970s. Robert’s goal was to present God’s creation to mankind through photography.
He published books on photography, poetry, cooking and other interests. In his later years, Robert became an avid acrylic painter and painted landscapes, birds, reptiles and other elements of nature.
Since his early childhood, Robert enjoyed the family ranches: the OJ and the Blanco Verde.
He raised cattle, goats and horses over the years. Robert loved to spend time with family and friends riding horseback through his properties, trail riding, fishing and hunting. He taught his grandchildren to ride horses and drive offroad vehicles and trucks on his ranches.
Robert was a member of Five Hills Cowboy Church. He enjoyed leading fellow members on trail rides for charity on his ranches.
Robert is survived by his wife, Melva, whom he married in 2004 in Cave Creek, Arizona.
Other survivors are his daughters with his first wife, Joyce Campbell – Lyn Campbell and husband Jim Mizera, and their children Kimberlyn, Michael and Katelyn; and Robin Campbell and husband Dave Porter, and their children AJ, Logan and Ashlyn, all of Scottsdale, Arizona; Melva’s children, Todd Ingram, Timothy Ingram and Faith Beck, and their children and grandchildren.
