This week marks the 185 anniversaries of two key dates. Texas Independence Day – which commemorates the signing of Texas’ declaration of independence from Mexico in 1836 – was Tuesday. The anniversary of the fall of the Alamo will be Saturday.

Located behind New Covenant Church, at the back of the west-side entrance at 1604 Central Texas Expy., the church’s new disc golf course has opened to the public. The sprawling, ninehole course is spread out to encourage a leisurely walk from hole to hole with friends, colleagues or family members, while still tucked away from the bustle of the highway on 15 acres behind the church building.

Lampasas City Secretary Becky Sims, who began work in her new role in December, said she will work diligently to serve residents. The City Council appointed Sims as city secretary last year when Christina Marez, who had been city secretary since 2013, retired.

Lampasas Police Department Lt. Charlie Boswell recently graduated from the Leadership Command College-Class 88 of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas.

Casino Night, originally set for Feb. 20, has been rescheduled for April 24 at the county show barn.

The loss of power, water and closure of many stores added to the challenges presented by last week’s near-zero-degree winter blast. Some areas of town maintained power most of the week, which several citizens say is because their homes are on the same electric grid as the hospital.
