Jo Helen Phillips, 74, of Kempner died at home June 20, 2020, after a brief battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held June 22 at Sneed Funeral Chapel, followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas.

Born in Seguin on May 25, 1946 to Jean Joseph Elliott and Helen Irene (Cutright) Elliott, Jo Helen would later graduate from Haskell High School before attending SMU, where she met her future husband, a young football player named John.

While they both ended up transferring to different schools, their love for each other continued to grow, and they were married on July 27, 1968.

Jo Helen ultimately received her bachelor’s degree in education from Texas Tech and was an elementary (later junior high) schoolteacher for 44 years, educating multiple generations of Lampasas youth. In retirement, she enjoyed substitute teaching in Copperas Cove schools.

She is survived by her husband of almost 52 years, John Elkins Phillips; daughter Marla Ann Strittmatter (Joseph) of Aubrey; sons John Elliott Phillips (Jennifer) of Fall City, Washington, and Robert Kyle Phillips of Bryan; sisters Barbara Jean Brock (Jimmy Don) and Mary Ann Allen, both of Amarillo; granddaughters Lauren Marie Strittmatter and Claire Anne Phillips; and grandsons Clark William Phillips, Reed Joseph Strittmatter and Collin Michael Strittmatter.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the library at Lampasas Middle School or one of the elementary schools.
