William Maurice Whitis, 92, of Kempner died Oct. 28, 2019 at a local nursing home.

A memorial service will be held Nov. 1 at 3 p.m. at Sneed Funeral Chapel. Maurice’s body will be cremated. His remains will be buried at Kempner Cemetery at a later date.

He was born July 6, 1927 in Kempner to William Lester Whitis and Eupha Ollie (Wheeler) Whitis.

Maurice graduated from Lampasas High School and entered the U.S. Army during World War II. After he was discharged, he moved to the Dallas area and began working for Vought Aircraft. He worked his way up to superintendent.

He retired after 33 years with the company and moved back to Lampasas with Hula and began ranching on his place near Kempner. Maurice enjoyed welding and breaking horses.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Hawkins (Jackie); son, Bill Whitis (Susan); grandchildren Christi Gimber (Ed), Dennis Gregory (Robin), Carey Adams (Jason), Casey Williams (Todd), Lester Whitis (Randi) and Cody Whitis (Tabitha); and 11 great-grandchildren.

Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Hula, after almost 60 years of marriage; daughter Rebecca Ownby; brothers W.L., Donald, Delbert, Kline, Glen and Albert; and by sisters Elaine Rushing and Avis Sparkman.
