1st Sgt. Ralph H. Canitz, 88, of Denton died Feb. 5, 2020 at his home.

Funeral service was held Feb. 10 at Sneed Funeral Chapel in Lampasas, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors. Visitation was prior to the funeral.

Ralph was born Dec. 30, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the youngest child of Henry Canitz and Stella (Funk) Canitz.

He entered the U.S. Army on March 9, 1950 and served until he retired in September 1973. Ralph served during the Korean conflict with the 2nd Infantry Division and did two tours in Vietnam with 1st Cav. Peacetime tours included Alaska, Panama and Korea.

While stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, he met Annie Marie Miller from Bessemer, Alabama. They married on Aug. 8, 1952.

Ralph received several military awards including Combat Infantry badge, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service medal and three Commendation medals (one with V).

He was preceded in death by his sister Audrey, daughter Linda Pulatie, brother Henry Canitz Jr. and by his wife in 2011.

Survivors are two sons, Jeffrey Canitz of Colorado and Kenneth Canitz of Arkansas; daughter Charlene Chamberlin of Denton; seven grandchildren, Jason, Daniel, Jennifer, Jeremy, Scott, Heather and Taylor; and 10 great-grandchildren.
