Last Thursday, the second district baseball game of the season ended in a unique way.
The Badgers were tied 1-1 with the Taylor Ducks in the top of the third inning when Eli Calderon was caught stealing second base. As the tag was put on just short of the bag, an altercation broke out between Calderon and one of the players for the Ducks.
Some punches were thrown, and very quickly Calderon was surrounded by a majority of the Taylor baseball team.
Once the kerfuffle was broken up by coaches and umpires, a lengthy deliberation ensued that ultimately resulted in the ejection of several Taylor players due to their involvement in the incident. The Ducks were forced to forfeit the game without having enough players to continue.
Of the altercation and the repercussions, Lampasas head coach Chance Evans had this to say.
“Eli is the only one [suspended] on our side. It’s a one-game, UIL-mandated suspension,” Evans said.
“It’s an unfortunate situation, but I credit our coaches and kids for showing constraint and letting us handle it,” he said. “Taylor lost several kids because they all rushed the field, and we didn’t.”
Although it isn’t the way the Badgers would have liked to win the game, it still means they have moved to 2-0 in district play.
The next two-game set comes against the Jarrell Cougars, starting tonight.
“Great feeling to be 2-0 in district,” Evans said. “It gives us confidence and momentum going into the Jarrell series.
“I think we should have another good showing this week,” the coach said. “Our pitching and defense will keep their runs down, and our bats have been hot lately, so I expect to continue on our win streak.”
Tonight’s game will be in Jarrell starting around 7 p.m.
The junior varsity will start play around 4:30 p.m.
Against Taylor, the Lampasas JV picked up a three-inning, run-rule victory at 15-0.
Brayden McLoughlin threw a no-hitter, striking out six, and the entire Badger lineup combined for 13 hits to score the 15 runs.
JT Posten started the game on the mound against Taylor last Thursday.
