Badger tennis beats Gatesville, wins district championship

The Badger tennis team capped off a dominant district season by beating Gatesville on the road 18-1 to finish 4-0 in district play and win the district championship. Lampasas now will prepare for a first-round playoff matchup against Decatur.

“The kids were ready to play,” head coach Kenneth Peiser said about the match with Gatesville. “They came out playing well, and we swept the doubles again.

“Then we got into the singles matches. There were some close matches, but our players were able to stay calm and move the ball around and win 11 of the 12 singles matches,” he said.

Throughout district play, the Badgers were completely dominant, losing no more than four matches to any of their opponents. Their last two wins were 19-0 over Glen Rose and this 18-1 win over Gatesville.

The tennis team has controlled doubles action throughout district play, and the ability to start matches up 7-0 and needing only 10 wins to emerge victorious has made a huge impact.

“We were hitting shots a little more aggressively, coming to the net well, hitting some drop shots, placing it to the corners and just all around playing smarter,” Peiser said. “We are hitting better each week and getting ready for the playoffs.”

Next up for the tennis team, the Badgers will play against Harker Heights today for a warmup match prior to the playoffs where Lampasas will take on Decatur at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Glen Rose.
