Several other athletes at state finished short of their best marks.

“There were three guys that had PR’d this year in the 23’s, so we knew that was pretty close to where we needed to be,” coach Tanner McLean said.

State champion Derrick Warren of Jarrell ended up being the only one to top 23 feet, with a leap of 23’2”.

White’s best jump came on his second attempt.

McLean said he was “proud of how he competed. I can’t say enough about Cade. He’s grown tremendously over the last year. He’s a great athlete. He works hard. He’s grown both mentally and maturity-wise, and physically.”

McLean also worked with White the past two football seasons, as defensive secondary coach.

White said his football memories are the highlight of his athletic career in Lampasas. That includes being part of the 2019 state-semifinalist team and “playing with my friends all through high school.”

“With track and any individual sport, you really don’t have anyone right there with you pushing you,” White said, which is one of the challenges of this sport. He was the Badgers’ only state qualifier.

“Overall, it’s been fun to come out here and compete with everyone,” White said.

Six of this year’s state qualifiers are eligible to return next year, including bronze medalist Rueben Owens from El Campo, who is only a sophomore.
