Lou Nell Harkey, affectionately known as Aunt Nell, died on Aug. 13, 2025, in Waco at the age of 91. Born on Sept. 11, 1933, in San Saba, she dedicated much of her life to the profession of nursing.
For 38 years, Aunt Nell served as a NICU nurse at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where her compassion and dedication were instrumental in the lives of countless newborns and their families. Through her hard work, she attained the role of head of the NICU unit. Her journey in nursing was marked by a profound sense of purpose, and she was proud to be an alumnus of Baylor University.
Aunt Nell also was known for her vibrant spirit and love for life. She enjoyed traveling with friends, RV’ing and savoring good food. A true animal lover, she brought joy both to her furry companions and to those around her. While residing at Stillwell Retirement Residence, she embraced the community, helping fellow residents run errands and enjoying shopping trips together.
Aunt Nell is survived by her nieces Debbie Blakley and Connie Hartmann, along with her greatnephew Randy Thorp and his wife Joni, and greatnephew Evan Blakley and his wife Sarah. She also leaves behind great-greatnephews and great-greatnieces: Isiah Thorp, Chloe Thorp, Randon Thorp, Maya Kriegel and Everett Blakley. Aunt Nell held a special bond with Glenda Kroll and her husband Raymond, who were an important part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Tommy Harkey, and sister-in-law, Vernette Harkey.
A graveside service was held at Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee on Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel had charge of arrangements.
