Mary Black Griffin Davis, 84, of Lampasas died on Jan. 29, 2023, at Seton Medical Center in Harker Heights.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Lampasas on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Interment will be private.
Mary was born in Ranger on March 20, 1938, to Eula Mae Erwin Griffin and Isaac N. Griffin. She grew up in McKinney.
She was very active in school activities and graduated with honors in 1956. She attended North Texas State University and graduated cum laude in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in education/geography. She later did graduate work at North Texas State University and SMU.
She married Norman Davis in McKinney, and they lived in Corsicana and Henderson before moving to Lampasas in 1993.
Mrs. Davis taught in public schools for 14 years as an elementary teacher and later taught calligraphic arts in the Art Department at Kilgore College. She also was a writing consultant and visiting artist for the Longview Art Council, working in the Longview public schools and Pine Tree public schools. She did freelance calligraphic work for businesses and individuals across the country.
Mrs. Davis was active in community affairs, having served on many boards through the years. Among them were the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Rusk County Child Welfare Board, United Way of Lampasas County, Keystone Museum Board, Child Protective Services Board of Lampasas County and Col Potter Cairn Rescue Network, to name a few. She also was a member of several social/ service clubs, including Henderson Woman’s Forum, the American Association of University Women, and the Pierian Club of Lampasas.
Mary also organized and was active in Friends of the Lampasas Animal Shelter. Because of her efforts with the organization, many large projects were funded and accomplished for the shelter.
She was a devoted Presbyterian, serving as an elder in several churches throughout her lifetime. She was active in the church as a teacher of both adults and children, and served in leadership positions with the Presbyterian Women.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, Norman N. Davis; two cousins, James A. Griffin of Dallas, and Mary Katherine Bartels of Henderson; and her godson, Mark E. Bartels.
