Donald Clive Tombaugh, 89, of Lampasas died on Sept. 18, 2022, in Temple.
Don was born on Jan. 1, 1933, in Beaumont to H.C. and Myrtle Tombaugh.
He graduated from Lometa High School and then attended the University of Texas in Austin.
Early on in his life, he was involved in his father’s dairy business, then he tried his hand at the hog business. He went on to start a Christmas tree farm and a pecan orchard, as well as got involved in the emu business. Finally, he raised Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards, and opened his candy business.
Don enjoyed traveling, making candy, raising dogs, making stained glass of all sorts and trying new business ventures.
Don served overseas with the U.S. Army for a brief time. He worked for U.S. Customs as an inspector and federal U.S. Marshal from Feb. 1, 1972 to Nov. 1, 1979, then solely as an inspector from Nov. 1, 1979 to Sept. 15, 1981, and as a port director from Sept. 15, 1981 to March 25, 1983.
Don worked for Holiday Farms from February 1997 until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Jean Tombaugh; sister, Phyllis Nichols; and two infant children.
Survivors include a brother, Charlie Tombaugh; three sons, Richard, John and David Tombaugh; as well as five grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial will be scheduled at a later date. Heritage Funeral Home of Lampasas has charge of arrangements.
