Lometa ISD superintendent plans to retire next month

Board picks Assistant Superintendent Rob Moore to be district’s interim leader

    Lometa Independent School District Superintendent David Fisher has announced he will retire after this semester, with his last day of work on Dec. 16.

    After an executive session Thursday, the Lometa ISD Board of Trustees named Assistant Superintendent Rob Moore the interim superintendent for the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year.

    Moore will move into his new position Dec. 17.

    Fisher began working for Lometa ISD in 2000, and he has been superintendent since 2016.

    Moore began working for Lometa ISD in 2005. He served as Lometa principal before the school board promoted him to assistant superintendent in 2016.

    Fisher said the school board will “see how it goes” with Moore as interim superintendent before it determines whom to name as the permanent replacement. However, Fisher said Moore is “very capable” and is an appropriate fit to take his place permanently as superintendent.

    Fisher said the naming of a permanent replacement likely would happen in February or March.

    Also at Thursday’s meeting, the Board of Trustees canvassed the results of the board’s Nov. 3 special election.

    Amanda Tower won, as she gained a total of 313 votes to opponent Tabithe Whitehead’s 309 votes.

    Tower led 311-309 when the county elections office released what it called “unofficial results” on election night. Later that week, however, Elections Administrator Mark Bishop said with votes still to be counted, the margin was too close to declare a winner.

    Tower was sworn in as a school board member on Thursday via video call, as she could not attend in person. She also attended the remainder of the meeting by video call.

    In other news, the school board voted to approve the hiring of Sherry Stone. She is assigned to teach fourth grade at the Lometa campus.

    In his report to the board, Moore said semester final examinations will begin Dec. 14.

    The next school board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
