Mr. Casbeer

George Harold Casbeer, 70, of Lampasas, died peacefully at the ranch on Aug. 30, 2025.

Born on Nov. 20, 1954, in Lampasas at Rollins Brook Hospital, George was the youngest son of Thomas “TJ” Casbeer and Lois Casbeer.

Growing up on the family ranch, he learned the values of hard work, responsibility and loyalty, tending livestock and spending his high school years on the Battlin’ Badger football field.

It was in those early years he met his childhood sweetheart and future wife, Melissa Fretwell. They married in their hometown on Aug. 9, 1975, a love story that spanned five decades.

George graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1977 with a degree in accounting. While at UT, he fostered his passion for music, playing guitar in a band called Young Country with friends from Lampasas.

After graduation, he began his professional career with the Texas Comptroller in Houston.

George’s career soon took him into the legal services industry, where he rose to become CEO of Griggs & Harrison. In 1991, the family relocated to San Antonio, where George joined the firm Cox & Smith, later leading its transition into Dykema Gossett. Over nearly three decades, George served as chief operating officer, guiding the firm through growth and change with wisdom, patience and integrity. Even after his retirement in 2019, he continued to share his expertise as director of Information Service at Winstead until May 2025.

George’s professional accomplishments were many, but he found his greatest pride in his family. He devoted himself to raising his sons, supporting their education and celebrating their careers, marriages and families. He especially cherished his role as “Ace” to his five grandchildren: Blake, Nicole, Clyde, Mollie and Bailey.

George is survived by his wife, Melissa; his three sons, Sean (Mabrie), Ryan (Kathryn) and Mark; five grandchildren; his brother, Tom Casbeer and family; his sister, Lucy Walker and family; sister-in-law, Barbara Simon and her family; along with additional nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held at First Baptist Church in Lampasas at 2 p.m. Sept. 6, followed by a celebration of life immediately afterward at The Adelphia 1875. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.
