Judith Ann Hetherly, who served as the first female mayor of Lampasas, died on Oct. 23, 2024.
Memorial services will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Lampasas on Nov. 3 at noon, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Ms. Hetherly was born in Lampasas on July 11, 1942, to Valla and C.W. Hetherly Sr.
She graduated from Lampasas High School in 1960 and then earned her bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State University and her master’s degree in home economics education from Texas Woman’s University in 1969.
While working toward her degrees, Ms. Hetherly was treasurer of the Student Senate, and held officer roles in Alpha Delta Pi and other associations.
Ms. Hetherly devoted 32 years to education, teaching at the secondary and university levels. She also worked as an area consultant with the Texas Education Agency, later returning as assistant director and then director of Family and Consumer Education.
In 1999, she returned to her hometown of Lampasas, where she opened an antique business and became engaged in her community. Ms. Hetherly served five years on the Lampasas City Council and another five years as mayor.
She had significant contributions through Preservation Lampasas Inc. and Vision Lampasas, and she played a vital role in establishing the Lampasas County Higher Education Center and its LCHEC Foundation.
Ms. Hetherly also was involved with the Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce and Lampasas County Historical Commission. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
Ms. Hetherly was preceded in death by her brothers C.W. Hetherly Sr. and Clyde Hetherly; her nephew, Mark; and by a grand-nephew, Andrew.
She is survived by her sister-inlaw, Wanda of Austin; nephew Mike Hetherly and wife Natalie of Austin; a niece, Heather Lynch, and husband Joe of Cleveland, Ohio; and six grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
