Mr. Vann

Virgil Vaughn Vann, 88, of Lampasas died at his home on Jan. 25, 2024.

Graveside services were held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Jan 28. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel had charge of arrangements.

Vaughn was born on April 21, 1935, in Bell County to Leslie Lee Vann and Ora Viola (Carpenter) Vann.

Vaughn married Jo Ann Rainwater on July 4, 1957.

He served in the U.S. Army as a tank mechanic. After returning from overseas in the military, he worked at Fort Hood in electrical powerline construction.

He moved the family to Odessa, where he worked for 36 years in the oilfield. He moved from roughneck to a drilling foreman, looking after multiple rigs in the West Texas area.

After retirement, he returned to Lampasas, where he enjoyed farming and ranching until his death.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dominoes and watching the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed family reunions, family gatherings, and vacationing with his wife and grandchildren.

Vaughn believed in a hard work ethic, being a man of his word, serving others and always returning things in better condition than when they were borrowed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Vann; brothers John Vann, Lee Vann, Lynn Vann and Dale Vann; and a sister, Fannie Mae Hill (Louis).

Survivors include his children Tony Dewayne Vann (Anita) and Leah Denise Thornton (Weldon); sisters-in-law Faydell Vann, Lynette Vann and Marianne Scarborough; grandchildren Nick Thornton (Rosie) and Kayla Meadows (Mark); and great-grandchildren Hunter Lynn Thornton, Mia Trujillo, Mateo Trujillo, Jeremiah Vann Meadows, Dylan Rae Meadows and Leah Michelle Meadows.
