After a plea for public water conservation by Kempner Water Supply Corp., the city of Lampasas implemented its Stage 2 Water Conservation & Drought Contingency Plan on Tuesday.
The goal of Stage 2 water conservation is to achieve a 10% reduction in total water use or daily water demand.
In a Monday evening meeting, Lampasas City Manager Finley deGraffenried told the council that formal notices of water conservation had been received from Central Texas Water Supply Corp. and Kempner Water Supply Corp. earlier that day.
DeGraffenried said a formal notice from these water suppliers is part of what triggers increasing the city conservation protocols.
“The reality of the situation is, these raw water pumps are not at the depths that can pump efficiently at that [lake] level,” he said. “We certainly think we need to go into Stage 2.”
Stage 2 water conservation limits irrigation to two days a week between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., with designated days dependent on individual addresses, city officials said in a statement.
Irrigation of landscaped areas is limited to Mondays and Thursdays for customers with a street address ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8), and Tuesdays and Fridays for customers with a street address ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9).
Use of water to wash any motor vehicle, motorbike, boat, trailer, airplane or other vehicle is prohibited except on designated watering days between the hours of midnight and 10 a.m. and between 8 p.m. and midnight. This does not affect the operation of a commercial car wash, according to city documents.
Operation of any ornamental fountain or pond for aesthetic or scenic purposes is prohibited, except if it supports aquatic life or if it is equipped with a recirculation system.
Restaurants are prohibited from serving water to patrons except upon request of the patron.
Washing buildings or paved surfaces is prohibited.
