Bonnie Hammond of the Quilt of Honor group was in Lampasas last weekend for a special presentation to paratrooper Justin Dupree.
On Jan. 25, veteran Justin Dupree received a heartwarming token of appreciation for his military service: a handcrafted quilt from Quilts of Valor. A small ceremony took place at Rustler’s Junction in Lampasas, where Dupree now works.
Dupree’s journey of service began as a paratrooper and MOS 92F petroleum supply specialist in the Army, where he dedicated eight years before being retired while stationed at Fort Cavazos. During his time in the military, Dupree served two deployments to Afghanistan in 2009 and 2013, contributing to missions vital to national security.
Last Saturday’s event was a poignant moment to honor his commitment and sacrifices.
The quilt was assembled in just two days and presented by Quilts of Valor representative Bonnie Hammond, owner of A Dash of Southern Charm Quilt Shop. Along with the quilt, Dupree also received a certificate detailing the significance of each layer: “The top of the quilt, with its many colors, shapes and fabrics, represents our communities and the many individuals we are.
“The batting or the center of the quilt, is its warmth. It represents our hope that this quilt will bring comfort, peace and healing to the individual who receives it.
“The backing is the strength that supports all layers of the quilt. It represents the strength of the recipient, the support of his or her family, community and our nation.
“The stitches that bind the layers together represents the love, gratitude and sometimes tears of the maker.”
The certificate read: “ In recognition of your service to this nation, it is a privilege to provide honor and comfort to you through the award of this quilt of valor. Though we may never know the depth of your service, we recognize and honor your sacrifice to protect and defend the United States of America. As a gesture of gratitude from a grateful nation, we award you this quilt of valor.”
Dupree, who has been married to his wife, Tabitha, for over 17 years and is a proud father of three daughters — Brook, Bailey and Skye — expressed his gratitude for the recognition and handled the quilt in the same manner as the American flag, not allowing any part of it to touch the ground while being displayed. Surrounded by his family and colleagues, the moment was a reminder of respect and appreciation for those who have chosen to serve their country.
Quilts of Valor, a nationwide organization, has touched countless lives with its mission to honor servicemembers and veterans. To date, the organization has presented more than 380,000 quilts.
