Dogs, turtles, rabbits and more welcome at Pet Parade

While the Spring Ho Festival presents plenty of sights and activities to partake in, one fan favorite is the Pet Parade on July 10.

Participants dress up their beloved animals, place them on leashes or in wagons or cages and compete for awards in various divisions.

The awards ceremony takes place at the courthouse bandstand in downtown Lampasas.

One key for success is adhering to the annual theme, according to Spring Ho Committee member Megan Tabor. Judges will have categories including best dressed pet, most unusual pet and best use of theme. Tabor said participants who set themselves apart tend to lean into the theme, which this year is “Stars, Stripes and Spring Ho Nights.” Costumes for pets and pet handlers are encouraged.

“There are several categories, but the standouts [in the parade] are the best use of the theme,” she said.

Past parades have included a wide variety of pets, such as turtles, rabbits and birds. Pets must be up to date on their vaccinations. Also, hoofed animals are not allowed to join the parade.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the depot on the corner of Live Oak and Second Street. The parade itself starts around 9:30 after the conclusion of the Diaper Derby.

Parade participants will make their way to the bandstand, where they can show off for the audience and enjoy some fun with their animal friends.
