JEFF LOWE | DISPATCH RECORD Daunte Cuffie (25) finishes a tackle on Gatesville’s Anthony Costas. Costas was one of six Gatesville players to score in the district opener Friday at Badger Field. JEFF LOWE | DISPATCH RECORD Gatesville used an explosive offensive start and two defensive takeaways in the red zone to defeat Lampasas 49-13 on Friday.

The unbeaten Hornets entered the game ranked 12th statewide in the Conference 4A Harris Ratings.

Jett Truss recorded four of the Hornets’ touchdowns – spreading passes to three receivers and scoring once on a run.

Lampasas (1-5, 0-1 in district play) reached the end zone twice on passes from freshman Ace Whitehead to sophomore Clayton Bever. But the first of those came after Gatesville already posted a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

Whitehead connected with Bever on a three-yard touchdown pass about two minutes into the second quarter.

The Hornets then scored 21 unanswered points, and the normally energetic home crowd fell silent.

Lampasas stopped Gatesville on fourth down late in the third quarter, ending a nearly eight-minute long drive. That set up the Badgers’ next scoring campaign – an 86-yard drive with three big plays by Bever.

Bever had a 30-yard reception and a 26-yard catch before Whitehead fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bever under pressure. A muffed snap on the PAT left the score at Gatesville 42, Lampasas 13.

The Hornets answered with a quick touchdown drive and ended the Badgers’ scoring hopes with an interception inside the Gatesville five-yard line.

Koby Allen broke up a deep Gatesville pass on fourth down for the Badgers’ last defensive stop.

Gatesville held the Badgers to their lowest score and lowest rushing yardage total since the season opener Sept. 1.

Whitehead threw for more yards and had a higher completion percentage than Truss, but Gatesville did not give up any turnovers.

Bever’s seven catches, two touchdowns and 123 yards made Friday his best individual game by far.

The Badgers will face Liberty Hill on the road this Friday, hoping for their first win over the Panthers since 2011.
