Sales tax-free weekend offers savings for back-to-school shoppers

Parents and guardians can do some much-needed school supply shopping during the state sales tax holiday this weekend.

From today through Sunday, many school items will be exempt from sales tax, including clothing and footwear priced less than $100 per article. The tax exemption is offered on both children’s and adult items.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said this year shoppers will save an estimated $87 million in state and local sales taxes during the three-day sales tax holiday.

A summary of the types of school supplies, clothing and footwear that may be purchased tax-free can be seen in the chart above. A complete listing of items can be found on the state comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Texas’ sales tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.
