Terry, a three-time state qualifier, ended her Lady Badger golf career this week. JEFF LOWE | DISPATCH RECORD Monday’s round at the state golf tournament did not do justice to the kind of team Lampasas is. The Lady Badgers opened the 36-hole event at Slick Rock Golf Course with their second-highest score of the season: 380.

After ending the first day in sixth place, a repeat of last year’s second-place finish was out of reach. But the Lady Badgers lowered their score by 23 strokes in round two Tuesday to climb into fifth in the final standings.

Andrews’ Black Team ran away with its seventh straight state championship, the 15th in team history. The Andrews Lady Mustangs carded 648. Their West Texas rival Seminole placed second, at 711, and Andrews’ Gold Team claimed third at 721.

“Golf is one of those games that no matter how much you practice, there’s gonna be times where things just don’t go right,” LHS coach Justin Schulze said.

Monday was one of those days for several teams. Even Andrews had players shoot in the 80s and 90s, but most of the golfers had a better outing Tuesday. Lady Badgers Niki Terry, Allison Hendrick, Taylor Florio and Kirsten Richards improved their scores on Tuesday.

“We lost our composure [Monday], but the second day we brought it back and played like we were supposed to,” Terry said.

“It showed we could stay positive and stay confident, which is what Coach has been saying to us all year,” she added.

Terry, Allison Harrell and Florio are seniors and part of the first class that Schulze has coached all the way from freshman to senior year.

“To watch them progress has been really fun,” Schulze said. “It’s phenomenal to see how far they’ve come.”

The state tournament this week was the third of Terry’s high school career. She finished 16th individually, leading her team and beating all her district opponents from Salado and Liberty Hill.

Terry said the past four years were the “best four years of my life in this sense” – being on the golf team, she explained.

The Lady Badger is considering playing golf at Angelo State University next year, but she has not officially committed.
