Gas station planned at Saratoga Motel site
A spokesman for Valero Energy said the sale of the Saratoga Motel in Lampasas could be finalized by this summer, which will allow for construction soon afterward of a fueling station and convenience store.
The San Antonio-based company continues to plan development of a 4,600-square-foot Valero Corner Store at 1408 S. Key Ave., spokesman Bill Day said. Valero Energy has a contract to purchase the local motel property, Day said, and officials hope to open their 24-hour convenience store by the end of the year.
The new store will offer gasoline and diesel pumps, and – like all new and remodeled Valero stores, Day said – will feature at least one fueling site for E-85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The spokesman said the exact number of pumps has not been determined.
The retail outlet also will sell food and beverages. In addition, a public notice published in the Lampasas Dispatch Record says “Big Diamond Inc. dba Corner Store # 1553” at 1408 S. Key has applied to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a wine and beer retailer’s offpremise permit.
The store expects to employ 12-20 workers – some part-time and some full-time employees – Day said.
Valero operates in a wide area of the Southwest, with the majority of the company’s stores in Texas, said the company spokesman.
“So we were familiar with the area, and people are familiar with us,” he said.
Day said Lampasas made a logical place to construct a new store because the area is growing, has significant traffic – especially on U.S. Highway 281 – and attracts visitors who travel to the Hill Country. Valero recently has added stores across Texas and has focused on growing markets, he said.
The Valero Corner Store nearest to Lampasas may be located in San Antonio, Day said.
Saratoga Motel owner Hasmukh Patel declined to comment about the pending property sale.
